Free Agency
Free Agency will begin on November 1. To bid on a player, make a thread under 2014 Free Agency (2014 folder will be for the off-season between the 2013 and 2014 seasons). List the player, yearly salary, the contract length, and the total value of the contract. The owner who bids the most will win the player. Note that after the initial bid is made, each bid must have a higher total than the previous bid amount. Bids must either 1. be at least $100,000 more in yearly salary than the previous bid, or 2. be a greater number of years than the previous bid at the same yearly salary.
Example: Minnesota puts Rich Harden up for bidding. Minnesota - Rich Harden $500,000 (2014) Total: $500,000. Texas may then bid: Rich Harden $500,000 (2015) Total $1,000,000. Minnesota may then bid: Rich Harden $600,000 (2015) Total $1,200,000. Minnesota may not over-bid Texas by bidding: Rich Harden $600,000 (2014) Total $600,000. The total amount of this bid is $600,000, whereas the total amount of Texas' bid was $1,000,000. The total amount of each bid must be greater than the total amount of the previous bid.
The maximum number of years that a contract can be is 6. There is no maximum salary that can be bid. An owner must have enough cap space for all of the bids he makes. Even if he expects to be over-bid, an owner cannot bid more than he can afford to win. If an owner accidentally bids over his cap, he will be assessed a 2 million dollar cap penalty for 2 years and his most recent bid(s) will be canceled until he is below cap again. Canceling bids in this way will not put the previous bidder at risk for a cap penalty.
There are three periods for free agency: November 1 until January 31, February 1 until March 1, and March 2 until bidding is over. During the first period, bidding is normal. During the second period, each bid's total must be at least 2 million dollars more than the previous bid. After March 2, each bid's total must be at least 4 million dollars more than the previous bid.
No players can be won until January 10. Starting on January 10, a player who has not been bid on in 10 days will be awarded to the highest bidder.
Hometown Preference
Once each off-season your team can invoke the Hometown Preference rule for a free agent that is leaving your team. After the bidding is over for a player, you have 24 hours to reply to the free agent thread and declare your hometown preference. You then assume the contract the winning bidder made and retain your player. As with any free agent, you must have a MLB roster slot for each free agent on which you are bidding as well as enough money for all the players you bid on. A HP declaration is invalid without an extra roster slot at the time the declaration is made. Teams that make an invalid HP declaration can fix their error but must post a new HP declaration after fixing the error. GMs are responsible for making sure they make a valid declaration within the 24 hr period.
-----
There will also be in-season free agency. Any player that has exhausted rookie eligibility and is unowned in this league can be bid on during the season. Make a thread in the In-Season Free Agency folder with your bid. In-season free agent contracts are limited to one year contracts. When a bid has not been over-bid for 72 hrs, the player will be awarded to the team with the highest bid. The winning owner will have 24 hours to add the player to his 25-man roster. If the winning bidder fails to add the player within 24 hours, he loses the player to the 2nd highest bidder (or back to the FA pool if there was no other bidder).
