Salary Cap:
Each team has a $100 million dollar salary cap, which a team must stay at or below at all times. The salary cap is for your major league roster and for any players in your minor league system that are under contract.
If at any point a team exceeds their salary cap by mistake, they must get back under cap within three weeks. They will incur a 2 millions dollar cap penalty the following year for each week they are over cap. If, at the end of three weeks the team is still over cap, then the team will forfeit its first round draft pick for that year and the commissioner will release whichever player(s) put the team over cap in the first place.
Keeping track of your team:
In your team folder, you must keep an up-to-date roster of your contracted players. This will look like:
Minnesota Twins
Major League Roster: $90,000,000
Minor League Roster: $6,000,000
Remaining Cap Space: $4,000,000
MLB:
C: Ryan Hanigan $300,000 (2017)
1B: Justin Morneau $12,500,000 (2014)
2B: Brian Roberts $300,000 (2014)
etc.
Paid Minors:
Rich Harden $1,100,000 (2015)
The key parts to include are the players (followed by their contract price and their last year under contract), how much total money you are paying all of your players under contract, and how much money you have remaining under the cap. You can put in as much additional information to your rosters as you wish (ages, top prospects, etc.) but that's completely up to you. If a player is contracted he needs to be listed whether he's on your MLB roster or your minor roster. Please refer to this link for a better idea of what a roster will look like.
The only other item you must keep track of on this forum is your "transaction log". You can include this in a reply to your roster or you can make a thread just for the transaction log if you like. It will keep track of all of your transactions:
Minnesota Twins:
1/3/13 Waived Rich Harden $1,100,000 (2015), passed waivers and is sent to minors.
1/4/13 Waived Glen Perkins $300,000 (2016), claimed by the Reds.
1/5/13 Signed free agent Justin Morneau $12,500,000 (2014).
1/7/13 Agreed to a trade with the Tigers. Tigers receive Byron Buxton (minors). Twins receive Nick Castellanos (minors) and Austin Jackson $300,000 (2015).
All owners are responsible for the accuracy of the guys on your roster and that you trade for. If you are trading for Alex Wood and the trade gives him a contract of $300,000 (2025) when the correct contract is $300,000 (2018), then make sure you check for accuracy before you complete the trade. Board members will try to catch errors, but ultimately it is each owner's duty to make sure his own information is correct.
League Start-up: Giving Contracts to the Players on Your Initial Official Roster
The "starter rosters" provided in your team's folder provide you with a list from which to create your initial official roster. Choose any of these players to add to your 25 man roster. Choose any of these players to add to your paid minors. Any players not chosen go directly into the free agent pool. The players you choose to keep will be given contracts as follows:
1. You can give him the contract the player has in real life (the initial roster is the only time this league will ever use real life contracts).
2. If he is still within 5 years following his exhaustion of his rookie status (the year in which a prospect accumulates 150 total MLB ABs or 50 total IPs), then you can give him the standard contract for $300,000 per year that expires after his 5th year after losing rookie eligibility. You can choose between option 1 and 2.
3. You can choose to designate any player from your starter roster as a franchise player. See franchise player section below.
